- Make ready 1/2 kg of Sardines/mathi.
- Prepare 1/2 cup of Freshly grated coconut.
- Prepare 1 of Raw mango , cut into small cubes.
- Make ready 8-10 of Shallots , thinly sliced.
- Take 3 of Green chilies , finely chopped.
- Take 4 of Garlic pods.
- It’s 1/4 tsp of Cumin seeds.
- It’s 1/4 tsp of Mustard seeds.
- You need 1 tsp of Tamarind paste.
- You need 1 sprig of Curry leaves.
- Make ready To taste of Salt.
- Take As needed of Oil.
- Prepare As needed of Water.

Kerala Style Sardines In Coconut Gravy step by step
- Clean & wash the sardines. Cut them into medium pieces. Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt and leave it aside for 10 mins..
- In a blender, add the grated coconut, cumin seeds, garlic pods, and half of the curry leaves. Grind it into a coarse paste..
- Heat oil in claypot or manchatti. Splutter mustard and curry leaves. Add the sliced shallots and green chilies. Saute for 1-2 mins until they are translucent and golden. Add the marinated fish, mango pieces, and 1/2 cup of water. Cover with a lid and cook on medium flame for 10-15 mins..
- Now add the coconut paste, tamarind juice, and salt. Cook for another 10 mins until the sardines are cooked well and the water has evaporated. Remove from flame and serve hot with rice..
This dish can be prepared using other vegetables too like pearl eggplant, onions, snake gourd, yam.Once you've selected your vegetables, all you have to do is to cut them up lengthwise (batonnet cutting style) of similar sizes and cook them in a deep bottomed pan, sprinkle a little salt, toss it in coarsely ground coconut, and mix it up with yogurt and they're done!You can also check my other Kerala.
